A Penny For Your Books

Readers and writers and lovers…Welcome to A Penny For Your Books blog! As a book lover and wannabe author, one of my favorite pastimes is discussing the contents of whatever literature I am currently indulging in. However, this is exceedingly more difficult when the people I love neglect to share the same interests. When you join the adult world and making friends with similar interests becomes harder and harder-you make a blog! I am elated to have the opportunity to write my thoughts and opinions on topics I already love and to be able to share these with the folks exploring my site. I will be posting frequent book reviews, writing prompts and responses, recommendations, and arbitrary thoughts. 

As time passes and, hopefully, more people view and enjoy the site, I will likely add affiliate links for recommendations and for the literature I review. I will never be annoying with ads-I respect myself and you enough to avoid that-but it would be nice to acquire some passive income while I try to enter the incredibly lucrative world of writing. If readers have any recommendations for increasing money flow please let me know. It’s a tough world out here. 

Anyway, if you’ve read this far I guess I’ll key you in to how I got here. I grew up believing I could either be creative or good at science. I chose science. It’s incredibly flattering to the ego to be a woman in STEM, but with it came the stipulation to myself that I could never be a creative person. What kind of sense does that make? Alas, I studied Environmental Biology in undergrad and finished with Biology Honors and a Bachelor of Science-great huh? I had it all figured out. 

Time passed on…and on. Each job I looked for never delivered the promise of that same satisfaction that I originally sought out. I realized that perhaps I was more infatuated with the idea of conservation and welfare as opposed to everyday work life. This lesson took a long while to sink in, but when it did, I was devastated. Unemployed and unhappy with where I was, I decided to branch out. I let myself consider that I could do more than I believed I could and started reading more of the fiction I used to truly admire. Then it hit me-I can be creative! I can be creative and still enjoy all of the things I’ve always enjoyed. While this conclusion should not have been difficult to reach, it required more mindset readjusting than I’d like to admit.

With this newfound freedom of mind, I realized that I aspired to author my own works of fiction. It would also be brilliant to work in book publishing and contribute to the release of works that might have the same eye-opening and world-shifting effects on other young women as they had on me.

I now write this blog not only to practice my skills and build a writing portfolio but to help and inspire others. Whether this blog simply recommends the next book in your repertoire or inspires you to try whatever you can’t even imagine for yourself-I’m happy you’re here.
